Belief is essential of course. But belief alone doesn't do it because "even the devils believe and tremble". One must repent or turn away from their sin, confessing their sin or agreeing with God that they have fallen short of his perfect will, and trust in, adhere to, rely on the Lord Jesus Christ. When a person does this from their heart, they receive the Holy Spirit. Then they are to follow the Holy Spirit and in following the leading of the Holy Spirit is freedom. We don't use our freedom to "live any way we want". But we use it to live the best way imaginable, through the Power of the One that created us to live in union with Love and in eternal goodness.

You become a Christian by getting saved by the Grace of God. You become a new person. God changes you. You will no longer have a desire for sin. You want to live your life pleasing to Him. You seek God for the will of your life. You pray, go to church, and read your Bible. You put your Faith and Trust in the Lord. You can"t live for Jesus, and the devil too. You will love one, and hate the other. When you get out of the will of God, He will bring you back to Him, or take you out of this world. The Bible says, My sheep hear my voice.

No, you have to live with not what God wants, because God is nothing more than the physical laws of the universe, no you have to live by the opposite, which is a ridiculous book that has a ridiculous Disney like story to it.

You live according to the model that Christ set. We try to ask ourselves What Would Jesus Do or What Would Jesus Say. We also follow the way He lived.
