After going through much agony helping my relative remove a coconut shell, I read somewhere that you need to put it in a high temperature oven for 15 minutes and the shell will come off easily. I haven't tried it but it couldn't be worse than trying to remove the shell of a fresh, unheated coconut.

i seriously just did that TODAY. hahahahahahahaha!! i brought this coconut home from vacation last month and i decided to open it today.

first pick up coconut and throw it up high, letting it drop on concrete.

next look for distinct cracks in coconut ( u may need to throw it down several times)

when crack is found, pry open with fingers or knife.

it may take a while to get all the strings off the inside of shell, but after awhile u will have only the seed.

to open the seed, stab w/ knife or throw onto concrete!!

thats it i guess....

Put it in a 400 degree oven for 15 minutes. Allow to cool.
Poke 3 holes in the end with a screwdriver or ice pick and drain the milk out of it. Then hit it several times with a hammer and the shell should pop off.
