It's been bothering me for the longest time and no one I ask can give me an answer. How can a liquor (which is a liquid and therefore wet) be dry (which is the opposite of wet)? I hear "dry wine" for instance and think powdered wine.

And I know it's not powdered or anything like that.

Anyway, the question is: What makes an alcoholic beverage dry?

a dry wine or martini are considered dry because they have no sugar in them. A dry wine has 0 to .75 % residual sugar in them so when you drink them you mouth has a slightly dry feeling to it. the astringency of the wine causes that feeling. in the case of the martini it is dry vermouth that makes it dry and dry vermouth is a wine product with disstilled wine spirits added to it. so a dry wine will make a dry vermouth.

Dry Vermouth
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vermouth is wine infused with herbs, alcohol, sugar, caramel and water according to specific recipes in Italy and France.

There are thee types of Vermouth:

Dry vermouth is white, usually 18 percent alcohol (36 proof) and contains at most 5 percent residual sugar. It's drunk as an apéritif and is a vital part of the dry Martini.

Sweet vermouth is white (bianco) or red (rosso) and is usually 15-16 percent alcohol (30-32 proof) with up to 15 percent sugar. It is also used as an apéritif as well as in slightly sweet cocktails such as the Manhattan.

Half-sweet vermouth.

Note: One of the major producers of vermouth is the company Martini, not to be confused with the Martini cocktail. Always ask your customer wether she/he means a Martini cocktail or a vermouth when she/he orders a Martini.

I believe that Winston Churchill said the best dry Martini was madeby pouring Gin into a glass and then touching the glass to the vermouth bottle and not acually adding any.

(A "dry" martini is one with relatively little vermouth. One might say that a "very dry" martini is essentially a glass of cold gin, though the ice will contribute some water to the final drink.) This trend toward dryness eventually reached fetishistic extremes, and became the source of a considerable body of martini anecdotes, wit, and lore. One might prepare a martini by waving the cap of a vermouth bottle over the glass, or observing that "there was vermouth in the house once."

Dry martinis and dry wines are too different things.

Dry martinis have very little vermouth. You taste mostly gin or vodka.

Dry wine have very little sugar. This is opposite of sweet wines.

People can taste the difference, and they refer to the taste as "dry".
