basically what they do is put a sort of like...diaper on. I worked in a funeral home as part of my school's co-op program, and am hopefully going to be studying to be a funeral director. Because the body expells waste after you die, they will not just put clothes on you, or even underwear. Its a plastic diaper that they put on, then put your dress/suit on over top of that. As a little side note...they also do not put on socks or shoes unless asked by the family to do so

If you next of kin says to put on the underwear they do, otherwise they do not.
Also you will be stiff, and therefore the clothing is usually cut in the back, draped over the front and tucked in to appear to be intact.
I worked in getting service people that had died to be shipped to their home towns, and sometimes the next of kin wanted the person dressed in a different uniform than the one that is normal to have the body be dressed in, and we never sent them the cut up uniform that was taken off the body after they had been originally dressed. It would have been too gross to explain why the uniform was mutilated, especially that close to the mourning period.

When both my mom and dad died the funeral director said they would dress them in what we sent.
Taragagnon comment about waste expulsion --I was told that occurred shortly after death and would be complete before the embalming started. However, I do know the arms/hands can leak fluid after embalming so it makes since that maybe everything isn't out. My dad had to have rubber gloves put on under his military white gloves. Also my half sister had short sleeves on and fluid kept appearing on her arm (the funeral director said it was because she was dead so long before embalming).
But, I guess, what you see is all you can be sure they are wearing.

Serious answer. When my mother passed away the funeral director told me they always dress the person as they would be in life, including underwear. Just because the person has died doesn't mean you shouldn't show them respect.

the widow or family provides the clothing for the deceased... my grandfather passed away last sunday and my grandmother and i didn't know if we should give underwear as part of the outfit, we decided to give them some. It's really up to the widow of family I am sure they can go without underwear but it's all in the families decision

It depends on how cheap your family is and what level of funeral home you're sent to. But generally, yes, they dress you in death just as you would be dressed in life. Socks and undies included. There are always exceptions, though.

To everyone who is asking why people are asking this question well because my kids grandpa our dad had died but his wife always told us when we go out to wear good nice under ware incase something happens to you that whoever handles your body wont see ugly stained under ware now im asking this because he just had his funeral and I hope they put new or nice under ware on him because the wife will be mad she don't want people seeing old stained on the poor person who is hurt or passed so I think she would be upset that if they didn't put under ware on him. I would be upset it's out of respect that you put under ware on them so they can rest in peace..

Your family provides all the clothing. If they bring under garments, then you are dressed in them. My dad wanted to be buried in his silk pajamas and smoking jacket and slippers - and he was. Mother has chosen a sleeping robe, too. After all, you don't really need to dress up. God will take you anyway you come!

no they don't usually put underwear on you. it also depends if you are having a viewing of the body , they will dress you in some nice clothes given by your family and if you want to wear undies etc, then i suppose you could, but you will be wearing them forever!!!
