I want to make my husband a fruit tray to take to work, but I am still learning how to cut up some fruits, cantalope especially. He likes it in the little square chunks, does anyone know the easiest way to achieve this?

I usually cut it in slices but to achieve chunks I would

1. Cut it in half. Get a spoon and scoop out the seeds.

Lay one half down on a cutting board and cut it in equal slices. Repeat for the other half.

Lay each slice on it's side and run a knife around the rind. If you look close, it's really easy to see where the meat starts and the rind ends.

Cut each slice into chunks.

BTW, in order to pick a fresh cantelope, just smell it where the stem was attached. It should smell like cantelope. If you get no smell, it won't have any taste. If you get a very strong smell, it is probably over ripe.

Well the way I do it is as follows:

1. I cut the melon in half, and remove the seeds.

2. Then I cut it into slices about 1" thick lengthwise.

3. Then I take a Fillet knife and cut as close to the skin as possible I usually get most of it on each cut.

4. Then I trim the remaining skin off and dice it up from there.

First cut it in half. Get a spoon and spoon out the guts..seeds etc. Then cut it in slices. then, use your knife to make cuts down the slice. Then just run your knife through the bottom and the chunks will fall off into your bowl or plate.(careful, dont get to close to the skin of the cantelope..not so sweet) Then do it until every slice is done. If you need to make the pieces smaller? Then just do it over your bowl.
This works with honeydew too!

run over it with a lawn mower....if that doesn't work.....half it, then half the halves making quarters. Run a small thin knife between the flesh and the outer skin separating them. Then separate each slice into smaller chunks. Should work well.
