I never really understood the phrase, "Whoever wants it more will get it." It could be said a number of ways, but I think you get the picture. It's usually said around sporting events and areas of compition. I recently came off a really bad tennis season. When I went to friends and family for support, they said, "You didn't want it enough." I think that this saying is completely garbage. I really do not understand why somebody would say that. Not just to me, but to other people too. What gives other people the right to say who wants what more? For example, the phrase was used in The Contender. The host, a very famous retired boxer, said the reason a guy won was because he wanted it more. How does he know that? Does he think the other guy DIDN'T want it or somthing. How can there be different levels of "wanting" somthing? I'm just saying you cannot blame someones failure on "not wanting it enough." The fact that somebody is compeating is evidence of their WANTING to succeed. Bad quote.

We all know what it means, for sure. However, you have explained why the phrase is so hurtful and degrading. I agree totally with you. Good for you for pointing out the flaws in the thinking behind the phrase.

Cheers!!

"Whoever wants it more will get it." means that the competitors are equal in strength, stamina, and skill. If your physical abilities are equal then the determining factor is sheer will. Whoever is willing to put in that micron of extra effort will be victorious.

When people say this, they are usually trying to convey that you did a great job, you competed to the best of your ability, and under most other circumstances you would have won. There's no reason to feel bad or criticize your performance. Its a consolatory statement.

That's pretty shallow of your family to say that. They could have said, Better luck next year honey and handed you a Martini.
Use this really bad tennis season to fuel the fire for next season.
Best Wishes

well I guess it means that whoever is willing to give more than 100% or risk injury to there self will come out on top. It comes down to who wants to win more.
