how to discipline your dog the correct way, have any ideas?

i`ve had my dog for over a year, and he still goes nuts! whats the problem. he doesnt listen unless you have food. lol. but thn he still potties around the house. is it because he`s a small dog? and they`re not too bright? haha.

If you're looking to potty train your dog, you've waited way too long.. But you can still start from scratch like you would a puppy.. Take him outside to go potty every 30 minutes or so, do not allow him to play.. Simply let him go potty, and PRAISE him like he is THE best dog in the world! Make it this huge deal, like he just won the Nation's top dog show! The more praise you give him the better off you, and he, will be. When he eats, take him out 10-15 minutes after. And when he drinks, 5 minutes tops. You said he was a small dog, so when you are not home, leave him in a crate. Dogs generally will not go potty in the same area where they sleep and this will teach him to 'hold it' while in there. Make sure to give him plenty of things to chew on and play with otherwise he will get bored rather quickly. Get him used to the crate by placing him inside and leaving the house for a short time. Do this every day and increase your time gone by a few minutes each time. Soon he will get the idea, and learn to hold his potty. When you feel confident enough, you can leave him in the bathroom, or block off the kitchen when you leave the house.. PRAISE him each and every time he holds it while you are gone.. again its best to do this just as you did the crate, leave for a few minutes and praise him when you get back.. Each time, be gone for just a little bit longer. When he has an accident (and most dogs will) If you DO NOT catch him in the act of going to the bathroom in the house, do not discipline him because he will have no clue what you're yelling at him for. And contrary to popular belief, rubbing his nose in it will not make a difference. If you catch him going in the house, in a firm, loud voice say "NO!!!" and immediately take him outside.. this shows him that going inside is not the proper bahaviour and by taking him outside, this says, okay here is where i go. When he potties there, praise him like he's the best doggie in the world. The more you love him when he does good, the more he will want to please you. Every discipline should be in loud, firm, low toned voices.. Never spank or hit the dog, as this only teaches him that hands can cause pain, and they will resort to biting or will regress into shy and timid dogs. depends on the breed of the dog. how much time you spend with them is aslo a factor. if it is a mutt, in my opinion, they are easier to train. i have had several poms and they are little brats. yelling at them is not the answer, be patient, show them where their "potty' area is and reward them with treats. the treats should only be given when they have learned. good boy/girl should also be said to let them know they were right.....they have feelings too

put corn kerrnals in an empty water bottle and every time he does something bad shake it ...It will scare the crap out of him but its very effective and you don't have to spank him! Worked on my Boxer and they're the worse when it comes to being spazzes! Good Luck!
