I do'nt know why so many Puerto Ricans are on welfare, but I can guess why so many people are jobless. Number 1 would be health care. With the republicans refusing to raise the minimum wage and employers refusing to pay any kind of DECENT health care - re Wallmart- even a person making ten dollars an hour could'nt afford insurance. On welfare at least you can get medicare. Number 2 would be wages. When I was a kid I was the oldest of six kids. My dad was a union plumber. My mom did'nt have to work. My dad made enough to support us. Not rich by any account, not with six kids. But my point being, mom was home, not working. Witch brings me to Number 3. Child care. Now days the woman has to work. Child care is very exspensive. A single mother has allmost no chance at all, unless she has help from other family members. With the cost of gas, -Thank you George W. Dick Cheney Big oil et all- even if she has a car even a fifteen dollar an hour job with no benefitts is a deal breaker. So before you single out one people look around. By the way I was a paratrooper. And served with many people. Some of them not even U.S. citizens. There were Puerto Ricans, Blacks, American Indians, Mexicans, Hawians, my plattoon sgt. was Polish, he was'nt even a citizin. Nobody gave a ****, especially when you had to depend on each other. So get off your profiling crap.

WHAT does this have to do with immigration? Why are you posting this in the immigration forum? Puerto Ricans don't have to worrry one way or the other about immigrating. They have all the rights of any other American, so you should not be bringing them into the equation at all.
I'm not even going to bother about discussing the generalization you are making here. I'll just say I've heard this question asked about other races as well, so apparently, there are more than just Puerto Ricans on welfare.
By the way, not that is should matter one iota, but I am WHITE and I was fortunate to have a rather privileged upbringing, so I have no personal knowledge of what living on welfare is about. My family were never considered immigrants to the US, we were here before the US was a country. And I am against illegal immigration.

Welfare was a program originally designed and set up by Pres.Roosevelt to help and aid those who COULDN'T work like the elderly and those gravely ill. However, through the years, the program, like many, became abused and didn't get nipped in the bud when it should have. Many nationalities have abused the program over the years but am proud to say, many states have taken the bull by the horns and have changed the rules. Those participating will receive state assistance for a short period of time. Meanwhile, they have to go and find a job. Their benefits are than reduced until they can carry their expenditures on their own. BUT THEY HAVE TO SHOW AN INCOME TO RECEIVE THE ASSISTANCE!!! If all states adopt this policy, it should clean the program up and place it in the standing of what it was originally designed for. Most people have self pride and want to support their own families. The illegals, who never worked a day in their life in their own perspective country, figured they could do the same here and live the American Dream...THEIR American dream. OURS require paying taxes and all that good stuff!

have you ever been on welfare?
it is the same as having a job, you have to go to class, to learn how to get a job, you have to apply for jobs every day and prove that you are trying to get a job, and once you find a job they cut you off, and the most you can get is aprox. $100 per person in the house hold and tell me how you can live off that? if you can let me know how! You have to be a citizen of the usa to get on welfare, legal or illegal - non citizens cant get on welfare unless they have stupid people working in the welfare office that dont know a real social security number when they see one!

First off you are wrong! Yes, many of us might be on welfare as you put it ,BUT honey, our island has been taken and put into american militaru bases, we were chased en masse in the early 1940s by the gringos who have slowly but surely destroy our land, resources, and have downloaded us to fly to el norte, in search of american good life, what our parents found instead were lots of discrimination ,low paid jobs, rat infested apartments , the rampant drug culture , all the while we were loosing all back home , to gringos and their allies, it was then ; this island is too small ,you have to live up in the nueva yores! ,too small for us , BUT not for the gringos and their allies. Puertorico is the oldest colonia in the world! And dont believe that Puertorico is the best place to live in the caribbean , go see the police with rifles on store rooftops! Go read some history books ,then come back and ask questions without merit.

Let us clarify something. PR is a US territory, not a state.Citizens can not vote. PR can not vote. They have little representation. No Congressmen. No Senators.50 states,2 Senators each, totaling 100..not 51 X 2=102!Statehood was offered them, but they turned it down. Too many responsibilities(they thought)...maybe they would accept statehood now, I do not know.
