my girlfriend of 8 months and me are having problems.things have been going great until we started talking more about things like religion and politics and its brought up some serious arguments.especially politics as im more of a democrat and shes more of a republican.we disagree on so many things and weve been arguing non stop latly.can our beliefs really be so bad that all the things weve built on before now arent enough to keep our relationship going?

Politics, and things of that nature, can be a funny thing with people. I won't even try to talk about it with some people I know due to how personal people can take it. Many people seem to lose the ability to reason and/or rationalize when you get into a discussion about politics with them. It's as if the ability to have a polite and civil conversation escapes them and they all of a sudden feel that a point is best expressed at the top of their lungs and then they'll completely close their mind off to what the other person has to say. Worst of all there's very little middle ground it seems as America's politics are all about the extremist's agenda. Not much middle ground.

So: I don't know why you two can't work this out. You two will need to learn how to pick and choose fights. Learn how to argue/debate and not let it affect the rest of your day. Learn when to agree to disagree. And then grind out some sort of middle ground on the issues that truly affect your household.

its alot better to get all of this stuff out now, rather than find out later and realize that you didnt know the person as well as you thought you did before. things like religion and politics shouldn't really matter much in a relationship if you really love the person, but sometimes if it gets in the way too much then obviously it can ruin the relationship. the best relationships are the most open ones, i think. even if you disagree with each other, at least you found out that you disagree rather than ignoring the fact.

Yes it could. A wise man once told me to never mix sex and politics. I have been down that road too. I was a moderate Republican dating a liberal Democrat at the time. We enjoyed pretty much the same things, but the thing she used to harp on me all the time was my love of sport shooting (pistols and rifles) . She looked down on gun ownership. I believed that if a criminal could have a gun why couldn't I?

Once our beliefs came out in the open we started becoming distant and it was inevitable that we would break up.

So the moral of the story goes:

If you want to keep girlfriends and dates around, avoid the topics of politics, race and religion.

Maybe you should just be friends. It doesn't sound like you two are having much fun. Religion and politics are sticky conversation starters. If you can't agree to disagree and are going to argue in circles I would suggest you part ways and find someone who you are more compatible with...relationships should be fun, not stressful for no good reason.

opposites don't always attract. you should probably make sure in any future relationships that you share the same basic belief systems just so you won't get into stuff that you can't get out of. but for the moment, try working things out. think, "is there really a point to this argument? is it really worth it just to prove myself right?" and your beliefs aren't bad, beliefs are good. they're just different. and it depends on what you built your relationship on until now...

relationships like these take hard work to keep, as of the two subjects you were speaking of, families have been broken up over these. talk it out, it maybe time for space or a change.

sorry

Just depends how strongly you both feel about those issues. That's why people date...so they can get to know each other.

You should both become Libertarians. There you will both find some common ground.
