An ultralight is the safest form of transportation.
1/3,000,000 flights involves a death.
Thats compared to 1/20,000 trips in a car that invovle a death.
Ultralights have such a low landing speed that its pretty easy to land one with an engine out. In order to crah you would need to fly slower than 25mph and even then it floats down. A crash landing would not be serious, almost every death was due to pilots flying into objects, or incorrect maintanence, and even then you can get a rocket deployed parachute that saves the whole plane.

There a different kinds of ultralights, some are hang gliders with engines, and some are fully metal and enclosed.
The kind you should look at would be something that has a lost of wing area for its weight, and a powerful motor (75hp or more).

Here is a sight with almost every ultralight ever made:

You might want a challenger, which is a premade ultralight with a short field capability. They are a pretty high quality company and you can finance it for less than a motorcycle.

You sound like a perfect candidate for the new Light Sport category aircraft. Only 20 hours of instruction required for a license, and no medical certificate. You can fly two-seater airplanes up to 1320 lbs gross weight, at top speeds in the 120 MPH range. Get more information from the EAA's Sport Pilot web site...

Fun?...most likely
Safe?...Once your feet leave the ground there's always some danger. No flying is 100% safe
Inexpensive...That's relative to what you have to spend.

Ultralights have to be the cheapest form of aircraft. They are basically a hang glider with a motor. A level dirt or mowed grassy area is fine for take-off and landing. You won't be up high enough for a parachute...so it it stops gliding, you have a problem. As long as the framework doesn't collapse, you should be OK.

Fun, safe, inexpensive. Sounds like it would be cheaper for you to get yourself a six pack and box of condoms.
