It's been going on for a long time. The transformation of American culture and Americans in general.
I hear ya about our previous stature in the world and our self esteem when it comes to worldly matters.
I think a lot of the 'defectors' of the Old America, are on a ship called 'polical correctness'.
This is still a mighty nation and a lot of the challenging you see going on today is motivated out of jealousy. And this includes the Europeans.
With American (USA) being the last and only super power, after the fall of the former Soviet Union, a lot of countries are as envious as hell of our lifestyle, luxuries, freedom, etc.
I just hope and pray that there are enough Americans with enough gumption to be willing to defend what it is that you suspect, and I agree, make America great.

I don't know, but I've kind of been wondering the same. The rest of the world seems to stereotype Americans as lazy rednecks or city trash who sit on our butts collecting welfare (even though most of the people really do need it). We're also known for our kids always in trouble and our high illiteracy rate.
I wish I could go live in some other, better country.

I don't know how to put this without upsetting someone, so I'll just go ahead and say it.
You have got it wrong, the world is not laughing at you, they are angry with you. American foreign policy probably the main reason.
For those who think people are jealous, read the above.

Don't under estimate the American people. For the most part we'd all just like to be left alone to enjoy our friends, family, and lifestyles... but if push came to shove, you really don't want to find out how capable we are of protecting our families and country.

Im dutch. Clinton's "yes I used pot but didnt inhale" and "oral sex is not really sex" comments really got us going. I dont get how americans just swallowed that. Thats where you guys lost a lot of respect in my eyes. And I know a lot of ppl that agree with me over here.
With those explanations your own (ex) president showed the world how serious he took the american people. And you guys just took it all in.... way to go

They weren't laughing when we conquered Iraq in less than a week. Even our allies are concerned about how much more powerful we are than every other nation.
Most of the laughing is nervous laughter.

We hold religion over science. They have a right to laugh at us! We're going on about nonsense while other countries get smarter and smarter.
