Why does it say in the book of Genesis "Be Fruitful and "replenish" the earth"?

If the original translation onto the KJV of the bible says to "relplenish" the Earth, does that mean the the Earth was once inhabited before the creation of Adam & Eve?? And if so, is there other scriptual proof of this??

If there was no pre- Adamaic race then how does one see the cromagnom man?? And why in Jeremiah 4:22-23 does the prophet record this conversation and this vision. Could not the vision be of the past and why the earth was made without form and void.

I just looked up the Hebrew word, mala, that is translated, "replenished", in the KJV. Nowhere is the meaning, replenish, cited. I didn't know about the changes in the English word, replenish. I thank the people who answered before me.

I read those scriptures in Jeremiah and they are written in the context of why God was going to allow the Babylonians to conquer Israel.

There is a Pastor Arnold Murray who has a T.V. ministry. He
teaches that earlier in Genesis, that where it is translated, "and the earth was without form and void", it should be translated, "and the earth became without form and void".

I looked up the original Hebrew and that is a valid issue. He states that Genesis starts after the worlds "first Age" and when, the "2nd age" begins.

I have watched Pastor Murray for many years and I respect him tremendously. I've never caught him saying anything about the Bible that I could prove was untrue, and I learned many things about the Bible from him. I can't say that about any other person that has a TV ministry, most are so off course it would be laughable if it weren't so sad.

Even if those scriptures don't confirm Pastor Murray's interpretation of Genesis, there are plenty more that do.

The word ‘replenish’ occurs seven times in the KJV: here in Genesis 1:28, again in Genesis 9:1 (both times in the imperative), and five times in three major prophets in the passive and causative forms. So does the Hebrew original in these cases really mean ‘re-fill’? But before getting into the Hebrew, we must ask why the KJV translators used the verb ‘replenish’.

1. An examination of the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) shows that the word was used to mean ‘fill’ from the thirteenth to the seventeenth centuries. In no case quoted in these five centuries does it unambiguously mean ‘re-fill’. The OED defines ‘replenish’ as having 10 meanings throughout its history:
