Basically it is a room that simulate wind blowing as well as air flow on the surface of a moving object eg: car/airplane. It is very useful room to study aerodynamic of a design.

well, as unhelpful as it sounds, it is a tunnel with wind in it

picture a big tube with a real big fan on one end

turn the fan on you get a beg wind howling through the tube

wind tunnels are used for many different kinds of research and product development

if you want to know how your device will stand up to a 50 mph wind, stick it in a wind tunnel and see

if you want to make a car that has low wind resistance at high way speed, you can take it on the highway where measurements are difficult, or you can put it in a wind tunnel and turn the wind speed up to 70 mph

test the lift on your new plane wing design --> wind tunnel

keep at it
