(And don't say it's because my windows are open!) I've heard that humidity amplifies sound and maybe sustains its decibel level for longer distances-am I on the right track?

The density of the fluid through which sound waves travel, impacts its speed and propogation. Since warmer air can support more water vapor, it is denser.

So I agree with your guess, it is due primarily to humidity. This may also be why it seems like you make more noise walking through a forest or a swamp than walking through the desert.

Its because your windows are open, and letting in more heat and humidity, sound travels better on hot/humid air !!
