I would say get the puppy and wait a few days before naming it. It's personality will give you a clue on what would be a suitable name for it.
A friend of mind had named their puppy Lily. About a month later it became apparent that the puppy seemed to be following her around non stop, getting underfoot and not leaving her side, just like a shadow. Hence, Lily is now Shadow, now and forever.

Think it depends somewhat on the type of dog. Have 2 females:
Muffin (Cavalier King Charles Spaniel) & Daisy (Border Collie/Retriever mix). Would have been a mistake to give the name "Muffin" to a dog like Daisy, as she's far too intense & athletic. You should watch the puppy & think of a name based on its personality, appearance, etc.

What kind of dog? You need a name that is easy to use because you will be using it a lot as you train him/her. I have a boxer named Rocket (he runs like a rocket), a mixed breed (pound dog-bassett/lab mix) named Butch. We have had: Sam (golden retriever), Phoebe (Old English Sheepdog) and other family members have had: Huskies: Tasha, Talley, and Collie named McDuff. Good luck! Puppies are great!

Bruiser, Hercules, or Brutus for a little dog.
Tiny, Shrimp, or Pee Wee for a big dog.
It's funny to give a dog the opposite of what everyone would think of as size appropriate.

I know that this is going to sound pretty dorky, but if you look on babynames.com, they have a "top ten" list of dog names! I looked to it when I got a dog, I hope that it helps you! I am also getting a new puppy and I am naming it Chanel!
