We have pugs, and they love people so much that they won't leave me alone. I wake up, and there is Sheena staring at me because she can't get enough of me. I find this very unnerving. Another pug, Athena, is very wild, and my son has to hold her down in order to pet her. My husband and kids like dogs that "cling" to you. I like a dog with more independence.
My cousin use to have a daschund, but they couldn't keep him after she had kids, because he growled at them. Sometimes when you have an old dog, they can't get use to babies, so I wouldn't blame the breed. Other people I know have daschunds, and I was told that they have the sweetest personality.

The pugs that we have snore, and Sheena has problems breathing when it get hot out. I was told that daschunds back can go out because the extreme length of the backbone makes it weaker, but none of my friends dogs ever had that problem. I think that it depends on the genetics. Daschunds have a normal doggy odor, while pugs do not, but pugs are always shedding.

Different dogs have different personalities, and while I would love to have Sheena to get a life and stop being my shadow, I would much rather have Athena tame down and enjoy sitting on a lap once in a while.

Both breeds have their good points and also their not so good points. The best thing to do is visit friends that have these breeds and see which one appeals to you the most.

Dogs love to play together. Maybe you can get a pug and also a daschund so they can be best friends for life. This way 2 happy dogs will greet you when you get home from school or work. One dog by itself will sleep a lot when it is alone, but 2 can play and get into so much more "fun".

You asked a great question and I hope that you will find the answer that you seek.

Neither is better, Daschunds can have back problems Pug can have breathing, eye, heat, and breeding problems.

Best dog you can get as any dog you find at the local shelter that fits your personality

Its all a matter of your prefrence really. As far as temperment, pugs and doxies are both sweet. Not too great to have around small children as they tend to let the child know with a yip or even a nip if they are bugging them too much. As for health factors, pugs tend to have alot of eye, skin and breathing problems. They can be rather hyper also. Doxies can have trouble with their backs, and they are easily injured. They tend to be more needy then pugs, which in turn makes them "lap dogs". Pugs dont' really do the "snuggle thing". So if your looking for a lap dog, with few health problems, go with the doxie.

If you must have one or the other get a pug. Daschunds are notorious for having back problems which can cost thousands of dollars.

Get a mix of the both! The mix is so cute! Maybe someone local had that mix by accident, or they breed them!
