Well I am not a Desktop software engineer, (but I am a Web Applacation developer) but the general ways of doing so are as following:

Implant code in System registry or cache that keeps track of the timestamp of the istallation date up to the trial end date.

The program has a subroutine that denotes the start date by the date on your computer. It then simply uses that benchmark to denote a stop date. IF you have not reached the staop date you can get the application to run longer if you set the date back in your BIOS. A lot of trouble but I got a BETA of Office 2003 that had an end date of June 1, 2003 to run for another year that way.

The time from your installation would be recorded into the system registry files ... so your computer would track the time starting from the time you installed until your computer time rolls to the expiry date.

You go to control panel to erase it if it does not stop on it's own and if you do not want it why would you keep installing it. There is no gurantee the notice will appear again.
