It all depends on what you want to do...

Word Processing - note pad to Word are pretty easy to use and fairly simple to quickly understand.

Graphic Editing - paint and picassa are fairly simple to use.

Spreadsheet Applications - excel, lotus 123, they're all basically the same.

Web Browsing - Internet explorer, Firefox, Netscape are pretty straight forward (you used one of those apps. to post this question)...

It all depends on what you want to do... the good thing about most software today is that it's GUI. It has a Graphical User Interface (GUI). And, most software applications have great online help -- just access the "help" menu and type in your questions and you're on your way to learning "new" software.

Remember, this stuff was created by a human so you'll be able to figure it out.

Good Luck and have fun.

As a windows user I'd recommend Mac for any beginner. It's easy for me because I've been dealing with it for so long. Mac's OS's have much much fewer holes in the code to patch and thus are less vulnerable. "fool proof" It's much better for those prone to the occasional blunder or two.
