put some canned dog food in with the homemade. gradually get him off and onto dry dog food. there is a book on how to cook for your dog and the food is excellent and actually GOOD for dogs. friend had a rescue dog that lost most of his teeth and fur, but was rehabbed with this special homemade food and looked great and lived to be 15. i seems to remember cooked diced carrots, steamed Bulgar wheat, cooked chicken, lamb and tuna also had some vitamin powder. He would eat dried banana chips for snacks. Do an Internet search for the book if you can't ween Wiener off the table food. Good luck and glad to hear you went to a shelter.

A healthy dog will NOT starve itself to death. You have got to get this dog on a good quality dog food. Buy him a good food with a meat as the first ingredient and offer it to him at meal time. If he looks at it and walks away pick it up. Do NOT give it back to him until the next meal time. Again if he walks away pick it up. After a few days he will figure out he needs to eat when the food is presented. At his age he should be fed either once a day or half what he should eat twice a day. I promise you if you do this it will work. You are creating a monster. As a vet tech of 25 years and a small animal dietician I can promise you you will end up with an unhealthy older dog if you allow him to dictate to you what he eats. I've worked for an orthopedic surgeon for pets for the last 3 years. over 45% of our back surgeries are over weight daschunds. Not to mention his glucose levels, kidneys, liver, etc.. Speak to your vet. They will recommend a good diet. I personally like either pro plan adult, IVD lamb and rice, purina one, and many other premium foods out there. If you really want to feed him home made food then do some research on the BARF diet. I have many clients who swear by it. Personally I've never tried it. I must also say I have 6 dogs. They are all trained to eat their dinner when I feed them. I do mix canned food in their dry simply because it makes me feel better. When I don't mix it they still eat their dry. I also feed them lots of venison simply because I have a lot of it. My Shih-Tzu loves green beans and any other green vegie. My big dogs will eat anything I give them. I do NOT give them pork, or bones unless it's a beef femur with no knuckle. It's not the going down so much as it is the splinters that don't dissolve moving through their intestines and lacerating them. Hope this helps.

I have a Doxie too, and he will eat anything you could give him - but the sad truth is it is not good for them. It can cause all types of problems down the line. Stick to dog food and give him a little treat (cheating) once in a while. He will live a longer, healthier life without people food. You don't want the little guy getting diabetes, heart disease, not to mention being over weight causes a tremendous strain on their backs. If he is a Standard Wiener Dog, he should only weigh about 16 pounds. He'll eat the dog food when he gets hungry....just don't give in. It will also cut down on annoying begging that they tend to do.

I have a lhasa that did this when she was younger..shes now ten. Why should the dog eat dog food when you are giving it all that nice yummy food? Just stop giving your dog all that stuff..though you can put carrots and raw veggies in the dogs food.. its part of a raw diet... though its all raw veggies and chicken wings and such.
But yeah, i had the same problem. My dog was living off of human food and wouldn't eat for days. But we quit giving her people food and she soon started eating her dog food. Now she will get some special treat in the food every now and then. Yogart, cottage cheese, carrots, canned fish... all these are good ad ins. But be sure its not a habit... or you will have the same problem.

No, dogs need a special diet. But he's probably been eating bad at the shelter, so you'll need to take him to the vet and they can explain how to ween your specific dog off human food. Usually they'll have you start adding dry food a little at a time, then moving to more and more till he's not eating human food. But remember, everytime you give him human food, that's what he'll want. It tastes better to them. I don't know when they'll ever figure out dogs have taste buds too and make dog food that tastes good to dogs.

It is ok to supplement their diet with home made food/scraps, but they still need a fully balanced diet with vitamins, minerals, calcium etc.
Many natural diets made by pet food suppliers have added these essential ingredients.
If you are just feeding from your table you will need to obtain a recipe making sure these ingredients are in the food naturally and if not, purchase the supplements and add them yourself.
If dogs lack in a balanced diet as they age they will be more prone to joint disease, these diseases are debilitating and often than not, are expensive to remedy, euthanasia is the likely outcome.
Dogs in the wild would eat the whole animal, including bones, a human diet does not contain the same materials.

There are tens of thousands of supporters of raw diets. They are healthy for the dog - as long as you are balancing his diet correctly. Please read up on these diets to make sure your dog is getting all the nutrients s/he needs. It's also known as the BARF (Bones and Raw Foods) diet, so keep an eye out for websites and books on this topic.
The raw diet is much more than a few bananas, carrots, corn tortillas, and rice. This is NOT a healthy diet for your dog. It requires special balancing of the foods.
Good luck to you.

no way, you could give a food that maybe poisonous, or he could bloat(stomach fills up with gas and then turns over cutting of blood and rupturing). I would call the shelter back and find out what they had him eating. If that doesn't work try taking him on along walk then offering him food, but keep trying dog food maybe those new pouches, but quit with the people food, you are probably only making his pickyness worse.

It's probably OK. Dogs are omnivores, like us, and they can get nutrition from just about anything edible.
You might want to do a Google search for "canine nutrition" to learn more and see if you can find out about any special nutritional needs they may have, but I think you'll find that dogs are pretty easy to feed.
You might also ask your vet.
One thing to watch out for - no matter what you feed them, dogs will eat Too Much if you let them! Obesity is not healthy, so watch out that your pup doesn't get fat.

My aunt who breeds boston terriers said that carrots are actually good for dogs, with the beta-carotene and everything-she even gives them for treats instead of dog treats. BUT...dog food has special nutrients and vitamins that dogs need to be healthy. I would just put food down and not give him any people food and when he gets hungry he'll eat. He won't starve himself, believe me. Once he starts eating his dog food, you can probably let him lick out bowls or pots and pans, but I would not let him just eat people food. I also know that onions are not good for dogs, don't give them to dogs whatsoever! Also, I'm sure you know about chocolate and all of that. I hope I helped! :)
