Call it midlife crisis or what, but I truly feel I can do this! First of all I quit smoking and have lost 40 lbs total. I want to continue to improve on myself for the better of....me actually! This is something I was never able to accomplish in the Marines, but I smoked backed then. Fastest time was when I was 21 and that was 22:30. I still have a good bit of weight to lose to be at ideal weight (60 lbs), but never have I followed through more consistantly on my life goals than now. I expect some teasing on this one, but that is alright, you'll be 37 soon enough...lol. Thanks for all those who can help; hopefully, some current Marines may give input.

Of course you can, sir! I trust that being a former Marine you will do it in time. The weight might be an issue for now until you can get it off. 60lbs extra is a lot on the knee joints to be pounding away.

Another thought is an elliptical or stair climber machine... it will get you in shape if you do an hour every day, plus strength training... but I'm sure I'm talking to a pro who already has a plan.

Good job and keep it up!

Hoorah, Semper Fi... and the like.

Well, I've never had the honor of being a Marine, but I've worked with quite a few, and I can tell you that if anybody can do it, a Marine can, at any age!! I will suggest, however, since I've been a long distance runner and very long distance bicycle rider and racer, and about 17 years your senior, that you be EXTREMELY CAREFUL about just what your cardiovascular system can take after years of overweightness and smoking. I know you're excited about having quit smoking and losing weight, but even if you were at your ideal weight, your body has suffered a bit from all the smoking, and maybe some drinking(?), and overeating, and lounging around, and you DEFINITELY need to take it one stage at a time. Do go to the doctor for a general exam. I know you may not want to, but I don't want to hear of a U.S. Marine falling over with a heart attack because of his "mid-life" crisis as you call it, and as tough as you Marines are, you can still die, so BE SMART and get an exam. One of my best Marine buddies is just now turning 60, and he's retired from the railroad and is farming and riding bicycles in a club and has been doing his PT's over the past few years at least, and he's never smoked, and doing damn good. And he's lost some weight this summer too, but not as much as you, and doesn't need to lose anymore either, so, right now I'd say he has a better chance from his training than you do, but just BE SMART and get the doctor's exam to see just how healthy, or not, that you are. Don't trust your own "intuition" or experience from your past to tell you just how healthy you think you are. I don't want to see any Marine die anywhere for any reason! So get the exam, and then deal with your mid-life crisis. Ask a question about that one day and I'll tell you some about that too. Being 54, almost 55, I've got some experience there too. God Bless you!!

I truly think that you can do it for at least another 8 years. Thing is, do it four/five times for the next 13 years and you can tone it down for the next ten years and then you will have a peaceful retirement with no/little problems (hopefully). You should also do a lot of walking after you're 60. However, this is coming from an 18 year old so I'm sure I'm not feeling the same as you right now.
However, you can do anything if you put your mind to it so good luck.

Sure you can do it ! I was noticing when watching a world-class triathlon on TV last weekend that a majority of the front-runners were people in their 30's (even late 30's.) It's not like olympic gymnastics where you're over the hill at 16. If you're willing to put the work into it, it's absolutely feasible that you could do this. Go for it !

Six minute miles are pretty fast, but very doable for a three mile run. You should keep training. Do wind sprints. They really help improve your speed. You will get there.

Good luck

Wow, that's awesome! My sister is 36, and she can do it, but she never had any health issues or bad habits. I'm sure that if you can accomplish all that you have so far, you can do this too.
