Your breeder should have told you. You can look and study the standard for minpins and compare it to your dog... how is the dog's movement, topline, ear set, eye set, ext. Its not only about the apperence... it has to do with attitude as well.. make sure your dog has the right temperament.
I show Rottweilers. You can search and talk to local breed clubs and they will point you in the direction of handling classes. Also, breed clubs (all breed or not) will have puppy matches... This gets you and the dog ready for the show ring. The so called judge will tell you what you did wrong and ext.
You can also go to shows and talk to people who breed minpins. Have them evaluate your dog. They may be harsh.. My fist show dog wasn't the BEST representive of the breed confomationaly... so i got alot of bad comments on her. But we learned togather and i got another dog who's sire in the number one in the country and who's grandpa on the dam's side is the number 3 Rottie in the country.
Go to akc.org and it will tell you more info on showing dogs. Its addictive.. be careful. :) But it is very rewarding and fun. It can be costly though.
Obediance is also very fun.. I also do therapy with my dogs. With a minpin you may be able to look into agility and flyballl.. both very fun sports.
I would start taking your dog into new situations now. Get him used to loud noises.. dog shows are full of barking dogs, intercoms, talking ext. You don't want your dog to be TOO stressed or scared. Get him out as much as possiable. It should be easy him being a minpin. I take my rotties to parades, festivals, shows, anything to get them used to people and loud noises.
Good luck. Hope that helps.
infodog.com is where you can go to search for upcoming shows by state.

Go to the akc website. You will find all the info you need on show standards. Also, if he has show quality breeding in his line, (research it) it's a good possibility. Try a local 4H show. Go to local dog shows. It's the best place to learn. Talk to the handlers and breeders there. They are usually always happy to give adviced to "newcomers". Even if your dog turns out not to be show quality, you can still show him in local small shows. Enjoy and have fun, it's a great sport, but watch out, cuz it's an expensive hobby. Good luck to you and your minpin.

You can tell by where the puppy came from. If you bought from a real breeder, you are aware already that you bought a pet or show quality. I That is made clear upon taking the puppy. If you have to ask if you bought a show quality pup, then you didn't. There would have been something in your contract about showing the dog.
You can go to dog shows, join the local kennel club, and meet dog people that can tell you the quality of dog you have. Even if the dog is pet quality, you can take handling classes with him. You still get practice. Then if you like it, you can buy yourself a show pup.

Have a look on your dogs papers, see how many champions go back in his ancestory first.
It is possible to get a fluke champion but this is rare, that is a champion out of non champion lines, you can try, but don't hold your hopes up too high.
I have a double champ. show coming up at the end of this month and am in the process of training my 6month old dog for the ring.
I can help you extensively with handling for shows, I have a lot of stuff already posted here. Go to 'In The Ring'
I came back to edit and give you the direct link to the info.

to start with...is it AKC REGISTERED??
FULL reg.??
Did you BUY a show prospect?? ON CONTRACT???From a REPUTABLE breeder???
Is it docked & cropped & dewclaws removed?
HAVE YOU READ & UNDERSTOOD the BREED STANDARD??
If you said "NO" OR "I don't know" to ANY of the above...you DON'T!
90% of purebred dogs are NOT show quality anyway.
BUT..you CAN do JUNIOR HANDLING,where YOU are judged,NOT the DOG(though it MUST be AKC registered!)

If you can find a dog show in your area, take him to one and talk with min pin breeders there. They can tell you if you have a show dog.
