The process of becoming saved is called JUSTIFICATION.
The penalty for sins committed are removed. Romans 4: 7f. 2Corinthians 5:19.
The condemnation is gone. Romans 8: 1, 33f.
There is peace with GOD. Romans 5: 1. Ephesians 2: 14-17.
One is restored to GODS favour. Romans 4: 6 1Corinthians 1: 30. 2Corinthians 5: 21.
The believer is now clothed in a righteousness not his own, provided by Jesus, and is therefore acceptable to fellowship with GOD.

There is now "heirship" to eternal life. Titus 3: 7.
Righteous living becomes possible. Philippians 1: 11. 1John 3: 7.
The JUISTIFIED person is assured that he or she will be SAVED from the coming wrath of GOD. Romans 5: 9. 1Thesalonians 1: 10.
The person is assured of GLORIFICATION (Going to Heaven). Matthew 13: 43. Romans 8: 30.
Galatians 5: 5.
The moment a person believes in Jesus The Christ that person is SANCTIFIED.

I think it's kind of like this....when we were kids and we hated our parents for interfering with our freedom, we believed with all our hearts that we knew better about the world around us than they did.

But...one day...we stopped short and said, "I guess they knew what they were talking about after all." You want to rush home and declare your regret for having been so arrogant, but when you get there they are reaching out arms of love and don't even remember the way you were.

So then the relationship between you is good. You know they love you and have all along. You know they can be trusted to be there for you. You depend on them for advice. You respect their ways, even if you don't always agree.

I also believe that is why God created the parent/child relationship. So we could "see" an example of His love for us. And that's just one example.

Anyway, that is true conversion to my way of thinking. Just a change of attitude toward God, our Heavenly parent.

I think it is looking inside of yourself, and seeing yourself as you really are. You will be humbled and ashamed, if you ever take a real look, and you will be crying out for a Savior.
When that happens, Jesus can reach you, and you can have a brand new life with a brand new you.

accepting that we are sinners and relying in Jesus as the only way to get to Heaven (through his ultimate sacrifice on the cross for our sins).

p.s. as long as the Bible translation you are using is a valid one, it's fine. the King James Version isn't the only valid version. I personally like NIV and NCV.

It is knowing and loving God better than you know and love yourself. It's being faithful and true to God, as well as to his church. Finally, it's keeping his commandments, mainly the two that Jesus gave us. The ones about love.

Finding a religious leader of some kind, throwing away all critical thinking skills, putting all your faith in what he/she says, and never reading the holy book- that's conversion for you.

Accept Jesus into your heart as your Lord and Savior.

That's it! everything else is just symbolical.
