Not really. Actually the United Methodist Church has removed "Amen" from the ends of its hymns where it really does belong. It's actually supposed to be a meditation sound related to "Um" which is used in India, I believe.

I think what you are referring too is something like what used to be called "Amen corners" in the old days. There was a little corner like a choir who would say "Amen" at appropriate times.

This is something like "cheerleading" if you like what the preacher says or to prove to the preacher and everyone else that you are still awake and not sleeping in your pew or chair.

Hence, it's also something like "I hear you" or "uh huh" when you are listening to someone.

What I can't stand is when people sign letters "blessings" when they are refusing to do something to help the poor, for instance. Now, that annoys me!

I noticed that all of the questions you've asked on Yahoo Answers are critical of Christians.

Why do you generalize and insinuate that ALL persons in a category behave the same?

Your thinking is irrational, illogical and biased.

I haven't noticed that Christians respond to everything with the response "Amen".

You magnify something that occurs only with some, not all of Christians.

coz they just need to say something even if they don't know what they're saying, like bringing peace to the middle east while half of them think Iran's somewhere in Europe, and typing stuff not knowing what they mean and how to spell them, like vages over there... or maybe it just sounds nice, may all brainless Christians get they're brains back from MTV, amen

Well I don't know how you can say something like that about EVERY Christian since you don't know them all. I have a mind of my own thank you. Just because I don't agree with you does not make me a loser. Its a free country and I can believe what I want.

sure the brainless ones respond mindlessly, but the brainy ones respond intelligently with "amen"

Amen means 'so be it'. It is an affirmation of what was said. Non Christians do the exact same thing only using other words or phrases.

Christ taught his followers to love each other, love their neighbors and love their enemies. Non-Christians hate the idea of having to love, because it is impossible to be selfish and exploit, hurt, or murder others when you are commanded to love them.

How about "in Jesus' name" all the time like they're forging checks! I think God likes to be acknowledged but it's not good to blame him for every stupid thing we do. There's a big sign up by a good sized church near me that says "LOOK WHAT GOD IS DOING!!!" Because they are building an even bigger church on what was the last little patch of woods left on that road. GOD MADE THIS PLANET HOW ABOUT TREATING IT AND EVERYONE ON IT WITH A LITTLE RESPECT!!! In Jesus' name, Amen.

You could probably say something similar about any religious groups -- with Jews it's Shalom, Christians 'amen', Pagans 'Blessed Be'. It's just their/our way of giving thanks to their higher power for all the good things they have been given in their life, and to bestow a blessing on those to whom they speak.

Don't be so quick to assume that it's a 'mindless' response, dear. :-)
