You usually have to pay for the score. You can get a free credit report, but they charge you if you want to know your FICO.
Be wary of sites that offer "free" scores if you sign up for a trial service of one sort of another. They are hoping you forget to cancel and then your "free" score will cost alot more than a few bucks.

The new laws say that everyone gets one free credit report once a year from all 3 beaureus. I know this is the law atleast in CA. Go to https://www.annualcreditreport.com/ which is the official web apge that lets you take advantage of the law. absolutely free, no credit cards, no memberships, no nothing.

www.providian.com, you have to to be a credit card holder to get the credit score.
Apply for the card, Transuion provided the score. you pay nothing
