The Romans were actually doing the work of Satan, the "prince of this world" when they crucified Jesus Christ. They just didn't know it, which is OK, because Satan didn't realize that having the Romans kill Jesus would result in his own utter and complete destruction.

The Romans weren't like priests. Priests must be holy and dedicated to the one, true God. The Romans were unholy pagans dedicated to Satan and all the other false gods.

Jesus is the holy high priest who offered himself up to God the Father for our sins.

Luk 23:33 And when they were come to the place which is called Calvary, they crucified him there: and the robbers, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.
Luk 23:34 And Jesus said: Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do ...

Jesus is still our heavenly high priest and advocate.

No, Christians don't "thank" the Romans for killing Jesus. We thank God for sending His Son to die for our sins. The Romans are us, we are them.

Little did they all know that in crucifying Jesus on the cross, they were, in a way, contributing to redemption. He gave His life so that we could live.

I hardly "thank" them for it...but I do think it ironic.
