With their thick coats they HATE the heat and water. If you've had dreams about your Sheltie being a water jumper dog on ESPN you can certainly forget about those. Plus they can get some good heat exhaustion in the hot weather so make sure they stay hydrated. If you hear any panting get the dog water very soon.
And if you're getting a puppy it'll be really shy the first day or so, then it'll get used to things. It'll go through some crazy antics like my own Sheltie, he tries to bark at fireworks and thunder, he hates basketballs with a passion and he hate loud car noises like squeaky brakes and motors (God forbid the mailman should go by at full speed or UPS, there's a stop sign at the end of our street right by our property). He'll also nip at your legs or loose leg wear since that was how they were bread, they did that with sheep to get their attention.
And of course while the puppy is young don't be suprised to wake up one morning with a German Shepard sized dog compared to the bulldog you put to bed. I noticed massive gains in body lenght, width and weight all over the course of a few weeks.
And even when they might seem a little odd they'll really make great pets!

Shetland SHeepdogs, aka Sheltie's are actually not that large. you can check them out at the AKC website.
http://www.akc.org/breeds/shetland_sheepdog/index.cfm
The Shetland Sheepdog should stand between 13 and 16 inches at the shoulder.
Temperament
The Shetland Sheepdog is intensely loyal, affectionate, and responsive to his owner. However, he may be reserved toward strangers but not to the point of showing fear or cringing in the ring. Faults-- Shyness, timidity, or nervousness. Stubbornness, snappiness, or ill temper.
