Who can forgive sin? I can't. No one I know can forget a transgression against them. We don't have that power. We can try to forgive and forget, but it is not a human skill.

The curse of sin, disease and death, can only be reversed by forgiveness, with Divine Authority...ergo...Jesus is a witch...

An incident most likely created by redactors who wanted an opportunity to express their own belief about Jesus' authority; in other words, it's what we would call a fictional incident (I'm pretty sure, but I don't have any scholarly commentaries in front of me).

In ancient historiography, authors (naturally including pagan authors; this isn't just true for the gospels) worked their own interpretation of history and historical figures *into the narrative.* It was simply the way history was conceived and written. It's important to remember that the gospels are witnesses of faith; they are not a "Jesus flight recorder." They bear witness to the faith of the primitive Church, but they are not necessarily historically accurate as we conceive historical accuracy. In short, they can't be used as historical sources to *substantiate* the faith of the primitive church.

The verse you refer to is Matthew 21:23. Jesus turned the question back on the askers. He told them that, if they could answer His question, He would then answer their's. He asked was the baptism of John of heaven or of men.

They knew that if they said that it was from heaven, Jesus would ask why they didn't believe John the Baptist. If they said it was of men, the people would be angry. So they said, "We don't know."

Jesus responded saying that since they couldn't answer His question, He could not answer their's. (Matthew 21:23-27 Old King James Version)

In Luke 2:49 when Jesus' earthly parents asked Him why He was in the temple answering questions. Jesus replied, "How is it that ye sought me? Wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business." Jesus' authority was given to Him by His Father in heaven.

Authority is the unavoidable result of accurate knowledge and actions. Jesus is the one and his actions and knowledge are perfect from the beginning to the end. After all, he is the beginning and the end.

Jesus declared to his Apostles, "What you declare bound on earth shall be bound in heaven, what you declare loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. I give you the keys (authority) of heaven. Peter and his successors.

So by the direction of Jesus Christ is our authority on earth. In His leadership and method proclaimed.
