You are shipwrecked on an island inhabited by two tribes. One tribe always tells the truth, the other tribe always lies. You need to find your way to the truthtellers village. You meet a tribe member - you don't know which tribe he belongs to. In seeking directions, what question do you ask and what do you do when he replies?

Problem is trying to get the tribesperson to show you the right direction. the original riddle had two paths in it that you could choose. Then you would point to either path and ask,

" If you were a member of the other village, and I asked you if this was the correct path, would you say 'yes'?"

This way, a liar will be lying to you, and the truthteller cant 'truthfully' lie to you. Thus, you are assured that no matter which villager you are talking to, the response will be a lie

If you only have one question, you ask one of them "Which way would a member of the other tribe tell me to go in order to get to the truthtellers' village?", and go the opposite way to the answer. If you'd met a truthteller, he'd tell you truthfully what the liar would say (in other words the wrong way). If you'd met a liar, he'd lie about the truthful answer a truthteller would would say.

Ask him how many tribes there are in the island? If his answer is any number but two, then ask him the direction to his tribe. When he tells you go the opposite direction!

When you meat the tribesman you turn around an ask, will this path take me to the truth village, if he say yes you know he is lying, if he says no you know he is telling the truth. Because you know where you came from, and know the truth about where you came from.

Ask him which way would he go to get home?

If lies he would point you to the truthful tribe's home.
If tells the truth, he'll point you in the right direction.

.. : )

Assuming I have only one question...

I would ask, "Please will you direct me to your village?" Then I would follow him.

If he was the truthteller, he would be directing me to the right village.

If he was the liar, he would direct me to the village that was not his - in other words the truthtellers' village.

Ask a simple question you know the answer too.. If he tells the truth then you've found the right one and may ask for directions, or am I wrong? lol
