StJames is almost dead on with the answer. That battle would barely make a scratch in Vietnam War history. The event was fluffed up for a song.

Think about it....

A good songwriter can make the Cleveland Indians baseball team sound like they died needless deaths in Vietnam every time they loose a home game if you give it a good rift.

I remember that time very well. It wasn't recorded as any big deal. The real attention came when those to singing cowboys , Pig and ***** needed a subject for a flag waving song. I'm sure, if it's true the men who reportedly died that day deserve the utmost respect. But to single out one battle and fluff it up to sell records is a dishonor to all those other brave kids that were yanked out of there home and made to fight that miserable war.
I enlisted in 1970 and honestly wanted to go. I went to a high school full of overprivleged richkids and was filled with hostility. I really wanted to kill something and I heard they'd pat you on the back and give you medals for murdering the farmers in Viet Nam.
Pardon my language but, what a crock of sh!t war. It's best left to history and not on the G.D. radio every five minutes.

Ignorant me. I don't know much about the Vietnam war, and that is a shame because I am not alone in that. The soldiers that fought in that war and left so much of themselves and their lives/friends/families/futures deserve a full thank you and an apology from all Americans.

Be sure to read the book "We were soldiers once, and young." The movie is really worth watching.
