First off, you need to decide if you think she is interested. If so, go ahead. Just invite her out for drinks or ask her to car pool, then you don't have to act like you want her number for anything else and if something progresses you will already have it.

I've been told that your are co-dependent if you date someone from work, but I have a friend who has been married for 10 years to someone who she met at work, so Poo Poo on that theory, you can't believe everything some "expert" tells you in some class even if it is required learning material court ordered to take. If you get her number by looking in the company directory or if you just outright ask her for it, she is eventually going to know that you have it if you ever get up the nerve to call her, so why don't you want her to know if you have it when you will be calling her anyway therefore by logical deduction it will be obvious to her that you have her number. You can just ask her for it, it's the easiet and most scarry way. But go for it.

Why don't you get a group of work mates together for a social game of something. Then get her number and everyone elses and tell her you'll call with a place and time.

What? That's like saying you want someone to give me a job, but I don't want to work for someone. If your interested in someone, just ask them out. Your shooting yourself in the foot by trying to be her friend first.

Ask her for her number by telling her that you might have to change your schedual around in the next month, and you might need to switch shifts with her. That should do it. good luck!
