good question .... I know that its an old fashioned way of addressing a male ..and that in modern society it can be seen as arrogant when saying it to people...I work in law enforcement and to be honest it really does tend to aggravate the situation when you call someone 'sir' that is in a bad mood they think that you are just trying to suck up to them so they fire up at you....I guess it really comes down to the way it is said in certain situations but in general I prefer to call people Mr. Smith ( or whatever their name is ) I feel that this is more respectful as it is addressing an exact person and not every male around I prefer this form of address personally ...of course there are some situations when sir is the right way to address someone but not often in everyday life

I wouldn't say I "enjoy" being called sir, but it shows that the person saying it is respectful. When I was in the restaurant business I would tell my workers to call me Mike if no customers were around. In most business it best to address the boss or higher ups as Sir or Ma'am if clients are around.

Anything different would seem'd wrong lol. sir is polliet and nice and miss- for the laddies or n' ma'am -sounds old like -older lady or woman.

Do you enjoy being addressed as "Sir"? Old school is good and treating and respecting your elders were the way we were taught. Are you refering to "Sir Elton John" or what?

I think they do, as long as it is said with sincerity, and not just because it is demanded, like in the military. I alway use the term, particularly if a stranger opens a door for me, or something similar, only I usually say, "Thank you, kind Sir."
It always gets me a grin. I think there is a bit of enjoyment for them in that.

I personally don't like to be addressed as "sir," especially by a younger person. I find it degrading as it reminds me of my age.

Yeah it shows respect and manners just like women enjoy being ma'am. Everytime I say that to a lady they just smile. Its also nice to hold doors open for people too.
