this summer it has gotten dry from the chlorine in the pool. what should we do to get it normal and keep it from drying out even more?

As a stylist, I see this more than ever! Make sure her hair is wet and has some leave in conditioner in it before she ever gets in the pool! Otherwise her thick hair soakes up the chemicals of the pool. If the hair is already wet, it doesnt take in as much chlorine. Redken has many products out for deep conditioning. Visit your stylist or a salon that carries redken!

I have read that saturating the hair with fresh water and applying a little conditioner is a good way to protect the hair when swimming. A light oil such as jojoba or coconut oil will help, as well. If these are forbidden at the pool, just saturating her hair in fresh water before she goes in the pool will help. It coats the hair and fills in, helping to keep the chlorinated water away. And of course, wash her hair and condition well as soon as she is done swimming. A swim cap can help, too.

Make sure she wets her hair with fresh water thoroughly before she goes in the pool. If it's already saturated, it will absorb less chlorinated water. Then try UltraSwim shampoo and conditioner for afterwards. I've also heard that rinsing with club soda immediately after getting out of the pool help to neutralize the chlorine.

There are specific shampoos for swimming. I buy one that is called "ion" from my local beauty supply store. The conditioner is a leave in that you can put on before swimming and prolonged sun exposure. It has worked wonders for my hair (which is also very thick). There is another product I have used that is sold in many places (even Walgreens) called Ultra Swim.

With hair that thick, it probably won't fit in a bathing cap. Make sure she rinses the chlorine out of her hair after she goes for a swim. After she washes her hair, have her apply a leave-in conditioner.

Humectress by Nexxus works well. My hair isn't as think as hers, but it is pretty think. I use Humectress after coloring or perming my hair.

rinsing your hair before you get into the pool, should help, becasue the hair sucks up the water instead of the chlorine, it won't solve the problem completley, but should help
