I would like to add some depth to a wall that will be painted in a warm terra-cotta color.

I understand that color washing is done by applying a glaze, mixed with a secondary color, on top of a basecoat color.

I want the terra-cotta color of my basecoat, but with just a little variation to add depth. Can I just use the clear glaze without tint? Will this acheive the effect I want?

A look of depth requires contrast, whether actual or perceived. A clear glaze wouldn't achieve the illusion of depth.
