I think that traditional weddings are overrated. Have you ever been to one? Boring! If you are going to get married and spend a buttload of money then do something supremely original and fun. Have a really good time of it. Women tend to stress about the flowers, the perfect dress, and fish or chicken. It's a load of bull. Even tho the statistics are against newlyweds you get married with the intention of staying together forever. That is what marriage is about so you should laugh, be silly, and have the greatest time of your life.
However, marriage it's self is overrated. Unless there are religious issues I'd just live together. Then you could definately save money. No marriage, no divorce.

I agree partly, it is a waste of money, but I had the belief that my marraige would last 100% or else I wouldn't have gotten married. My wedding, pictures, dinner reception and dance was done for under $2500, with about 75 guests; it was exactly what I wanted, everyone else thought it was great as well. We've been happily married 5 years, I don't think the cost of a wedding has anything to do with success or happiness in a marriage.

I think whatever makes that person happy. I did not want a frilly wedding but I did want a big party with all of my loved ones. We had a great deal of ppl that we were close too come and went without a bunch of the frills b/c it is just not us, we made in cards more that we spent on it so everyone had a good time.

Not every wedding has to cost $20,000! Keep it personal and intimate that's the best bet. Only invite those you love who love you and who are happy to see you(and your bride or groom) get married. Its more about the statement of commitment than the size of the affair. It should be romantic and fun but not cost a fortune. (this is what we're trying to pull off)

YES!!!! You are so right! $20,000 could be a down payment on a house. Or, a new car. It is a total waste to spend that much money (and then hear that some one complained because the chicken was too dry!!).

I think that everyone should throw a great party once in their life. If it's a wedding, more power to them. I don't think it's my place to tell them that it's a waste of money, lest I look foolish, judgemental and jealous. If they can afford it, why not go for it? What do I gain by being so negative towards someone else?
We die, yet we still have extravagant birthday parties - no one is b|tch|ng about that on here, are they?

Yes & No.
Some people dream about it, others don't even think about it....
Sort of like a funeral; the service doesn't really make a difference on the outcome one way or the other.
And besides, it's more about the families meeting..... and hopefully approving/accepting each other.
Whoever you marry, the family IS included. Beware.
