As a kindergarten teacher in Texas, I can tell you that I am happy when parents read to their children daily, talk with them, count with them, read the environmental print (McDonald's signs etc). That is all that is necessary for entrance to make any kinder teacher happy. Its great when they can recognize and write their first name, count to 10, recognize numbers and letters. The whole point of kindergarten is to prepare them for school and get them through the basics. It is great when parents do their part in reading daily, letting them draw pictures, play with play-dough (develops fine motor skills) and use inventive spelling.
I can tell you want to prepare your child and do your part, but it is not necessary to study for an entrance test.
Hope that helps! Enjoy these years and let your child be a kid!

I used to administer the screening test as part of the "special education" portion. I got to see the other portions as well. Here's what you should know:
1) name, birthday, address
2) colors
3) alphabet and numbers
4) the proper way to hold a book.
5) speech (the way they pronounce words)
6) balance (stand on one foot, hop on one foot, both with eyes closed)
For more information you may want to Google the test known as the "Brigance". It is a big test that has subtests only appropriate for some ages so don't get too overwhelmed.

I worked with skill builders and pre school preparing kids for kindergarten. I called a local elementary school and here's what they told me. Name, address, colors, shapes, how to count to 20, how to tie their shoes, recognizing their first name. We did learn their home phone number also. Let them learn at their own pace don't force them as they get frustrated very easily at a young age.

You DONT prepare your kid for the test.
It is to see if they are ready.
usually better off starting at 5 than 4 is pretty young still.

Four is awfully young for kindergarten. I taught elementary music for 14 years and even if they know their colors, numbers, etc., most of the younger kids just don't have the maturity. Also, keep in mind that there will be MANY students in class that will be 6 and turning 7 while in kindergarten. (my son will be one of those. He had a late birthday so we kept him out a year)

I taught Kindergarten. They really check the kids to see if they have any special needs that might have not been reported. they check basic knowledge, motor skills, vision. I wouldn't prep for it or worry. you might also never even find out the results. Enjoy your babe!

You are not supposed to prepare a child for one of these tests that is not the idea at all. Don't be an over achiever just let your kid shine.
