Well they have to pee on something right!? no really the answer is because they are marking their territory..that's why they are always sniffing things (not only fire hydrants) before they pee-it's because they can smell the dog(s) that were there before them...and they want to leave their scent behind too...female dogs don't do this because they don't really care for marking their territory..it's mainly a male thing (macho dogs!)

Entire males will lift their leg on anything. They are marking territory.

Fire hydrants are very much like a tree trunk and males love using tree trunks in their gardens to make a perimiter of their territory.

When other dogs mark the same spot, they will mark over the top leaving their scent as the next permanent marker.

It is all male sexual behaviour and is very, very normal.

It seems to be any object that stands out that they pee on. I think it has to do with marking territory, a way a dog sends a message that he has been there. Dogs always sniff things like that, I guess they are decoding the messages left before.

Cause the dog before them did it and the dog before that and the dog before that one and so on and so forth. They are marking their territory and when they smell other dog, they want to cover it up.
