Because, in man, there is no good thing found within. We have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.... An extremely relevant point that Jesus was trying to convey to those that think... "But I'm a good person!!"... That is Satan speaking through man's self-righteousness (and if you could save yourself, why did Jesus die for you?). I hope you got your answer.

Jesus said it best....translation: those who think they are holy, are "good," are anything but sinners, commit the sin of pride. Those who know they can never achieve the state of grace are those who constantly strive to live a decent life, free of judgement of others, and tend to their own business. Jesus tells us this, and yet, here, as other places, all too often, Christians take it upon themselves to distort the bible for their own agenda. Casting stones at others is NOT God's work, it is the devil's. Isn't it sad that so many of today's Christians think they are better than the God they worship??? Look no further than right here...homophobia, hate, all in the name of God. There always seems to be an "except" to God's word when it comes to some Christians...as in, "Except me." Good luck

Mark 10:18 (New International Version)
18"Why do you call me good?" Jesus answered. "No one is good—except God alone.

Jesus was using a rhetorical question, not expecting an answer because the answer is obvious that Jesus is God.

"A rhetorical question seeks to encourage reflection within the listener as to what the answer to the question"*

Jesus expressed Godly qualities regularly, including this humility. Taken out of context this is often a Jehovah's witness attack. However, Jews would have found multiple Gods ridiculous, and didn't write such things in the Gospel. There is only one God. Do not be blinded by the watchtower...

Jesus showed His ever present humility, and knew that He was doing what His Father was willing Him to do...He knew that His goodness was a result all of His Father...And I love Him for it, and His Father too.

Someone was trying to take some advantages of Him, trying to make him believed that they were to believed in him, even more and perhaps unconditionally, if he could continue a bit longer imitating and playing to be the Father, WHICH BY THE WAY, TO MY KNOWLEDGE HE DID PERFECTLY AND BECAUSE OF THAT I LOVE HIM AND I ADMIRED HIM JESUS THE SON EVEN MORE.

No one is good, not even the almighty. God had killed more people than anyone on Earth, that is if he exist. It's my opinion the only excuse for all of the death that he has cause would be that he does not exist at all.

He wanted those people to understand that His goodness came from God.... not within Himself.
