The golden rule works for me. Do unto others as you would have them do.
Here is a test:
If you want to do something to someone, do it to yourself first.

Buddha had a good set of rules:

1. To abstain from taking the lives of living beings.
2. To abstain from taking that which is not given.
3. To abstain from sexual misconduct.
4. To abstain from telling falsehoods.
5. To abstain from distilled and fermented intoxicants, which are the occasion for carelessness
(which also includes drugs).

But I like to drink.

Out of ten commandments I find 2-1/2 useful. Sometimes you need to lie. No killing/stealing. The rest is crap. We can go over them if this is what you were shooting for.

Concepts such as 'right' and 'wrong' are value judgements. Their definition varies depending on the era, the culture, and the society doing the defining. Every culture and every time has defined right and wrong in different ways depending on how that culture saw the world at that particular time.
Because there is neither a neat nor handy definition, many societies have turned to religions to supply the answers. This way, they can have clear definitions and know how to behave without having to make the judgements themselves based on their own concience or philosophy. Humans dont like things to be vague, they dont like shades of grey, and they dont like to be told that there is no absolute 'truth' about things like right and wrong. It's MUCH more comfortable to believe that these definitions are clear than to believe that they vary depending on circumstance...

The Bible says that it would be written on their hearts. I think that most people understand right from wrong deep down but just refuse to acknowledge it in some cases. Of course the Ten Commandments were given for those who were lawless to help point out what they must obey in society to be in Gods will for a good life here.

I think using the golden rule isn't enough. Many people think abortion is wrong so how can they use the golden rule as a guide? Sure, they wouldn't want an abortion, but how can they judge other people with that? They need something stronger to get us to follow their belief system

If it violates the command to love God and neighbor, whether in thought, word, or deed, it is inherently wrong. Unregenerate man (as in humans) are incapable of pleasing God. Therefore, living an existence that does not include believing in Juesus to be the Son of God, and the embodyment of Grace, is inherently wrong.

'Johnny zondo' said "society determines that"......the society is made up with the individual.
reason is the best way to determine 'right' and 'wrong'. seek truth and wisdom, this is best. Its not going to be based on 'gut feelings', Only do what you have reasoned to be right. Just need to be of sound mind, so are enabled to reason more clearly.

Know yourself

The creator judges that. If you created a universe you would be in charge of the rules of that universe, likewise God is in charge of the rules of his creation. If you made a clone you would make the rules for that creation but since God makes the rules for you, He is ultimately at the top of the hierarchy and thus makes the rules for the clone. So no matter what you create, God is in charge of it.

(Presuming the person is rational and reasonable) A person does something to someone else which, if done to him, would cause him discomfort or pain -- that's wrong. It's karma, sometimes referred to as the golden rule.

Right is a relative thing. What's good to do is that which helps another person, or oneself.

Various aspects of human nature such as empathy and compassion lead us to have emotional reactions about ideas and events, and this is the source of morality. So, if we see someone being robbed or beaten, we empathise with that person (are able to imagine ourselves in their position), we feel bad about what that person is experiencing, and we feel that this ought not to happen. That is the basis of all moral viewpoints - i.e. they're subjective value judgments based on our emotional reaction to ideas and events.
