He's a 10 weeks old golden retriever, i tried just having him on the passenger seat, and he will try to come play with me when i started driving. And he also tried to chew on the seat and even the steering wheel, i had to turn around right away. He doesn't have a crate at home, we use a gate to fence him off in the kitchen. I just don't know if i should get a crate just for that, or if there's anything else i can use to keep him safe in the car. Also, will he pee and poop in the car? He haven't done it yet, but i just want to be prepared! Thanks!!

I drive a sedan, i don't know if i can fit a crate in my backseat. If i have to get a crate, i would probably get the largest one, that way he can still use it when he gets big (and he gets big FAST!!) So should i still get a crate??

Soon he will be too big for a crate in the car. they have "seat belts" for dogs you can get at pet stores like pet smart. one type is a harness you put around your dogs chest that attaches to the seat. Check out your local pet store and they will help you find one that works for you and your dog. As far as him pooping or peeing in your car?? just make sure you let him do his thing before you get in the car but there is is still a chance. Keep a couple bags and some compact cleaning things in your glove box so you can take care of it asap.

Crate is the best way when they are young, some people even swear by keeping their dogs in crates all the time while driving, it keeps them safer if you were to get in a car accident...since they don't really have a "seatbelt". But it's all in your preference. I would keep him in a crate until he learns to sit still so you can drive safely on the road. And he shouldn't pee in the car, never had a problem with my dog. We always had a crate for the dog at home, there comes a time when he will get big enough to jump that gate...crate training isn't cruel (though some people think so.) good luck

He's a puppy. He may pee & poop in the car. Puppies aren't really great at holding it.

You should get a crate for him while traveling in the car. A hardside crate would be the safest. Once he is old enough to be more potty trained, you can consider getting a car harness and harnessing him in the back seat (back seat only if you have air bags!!!!).

He needs to be in a crate/kennel in the car. It is the same as having a child in a car seat. You can get wire ones and put in the back if you have a van or SUV..

And yes sometimes a puppy will crap in it's crate or in the car because they are nervous being in the car. Take him with you aa often as possible so he gets used to it and doesn't only go in the car when going to thevet, that will also make them very nervous to ride.

Never have your dog unleashed in the passenger seat - one false move, and he could go through the windscreen. Buy a dog car seat which you can place in the back seat (like a baby car seat) he will be comfortable and you will be able to drive safely without panicking. Unless you are going on long drives without stopping, there is no reason why he will relieve himself in the car.

Until you can be sure he won't toilet in the car, then a crate is the best damage limitation. When you are surer that he won't toilet in the car, then there are harnesses that fix to the seat belt that will hold him safely in place. You can also use the harness attached to a lead to walk him when you arrive at your destination.

I put them in the back seat and tell them to stay there, unless they have to pee, then they would have to come to the front passenger floor to pee on the pad. They learned not to pee in the car.

I agree with Nancy Kay, pee pads and a crate are the best way to go. Besides, then you can put his/her favorite toy in there and they are occupied or at least content.

well i think you should get a large crate (because dogs don't like it when there locked up) and you should just put down a rag, or a towl you don't care for down on the floor of the crate.

I think the pet stores (Petco..etc) have automobile restraint devices. It's not a bad idea to restrain your pet in the car. If you were in an accident and Fido was in you lap, he would be crushed, or unrestrained could fly out the windshield...
