I love NYC! Here are some ideas of what you can do while in NYC. First, get a good tour map. Then I recommend you take the BIG APPLE double decker tour bus for an overview of the city. There are several different neighborhoods so I'll highlight these and what to see:
Upper East Side: Metropolitan Museum of Art, Guggenheim, Whitney Museum. Walk up and down Madison Avenue for awesome shops and boutiques 96th - 57th st. Walk Park Avenue for architecture all the way to Grand Central Terminal and see the treasures located within. Walk along 5th Avenue to see/go in and out of Central Park - go for a run, go to the Central Park Zoo, go to the Carousel, go for a gondola ride at the boat house.
UPPER WEST SIDE:
Museum of Natural History -a must! on Central Park West,
Walk along Columbus Avenue. Visit the West side of Central Park and pay respects to John Lennon's Strawberry Fields.
MIDTOWN:
Shopping - 57th St (Chanel and the gang), Fifth Avenue - must see Henri Bendel, Bergdorf Goodman, Saks and FAO Schwartz - many other fun stores.
St. Patrick's Cathedral
Museum of Modern Art
Sony Bldg
Rockefeller Center
Go west to awesome new Time Warner center and visit the new Mandarin Hotel bar/restaurant for awesome view and treats!
Oh, Bloomingdale's is on 59th St and Lexington.
Empire State Bldg.
The Intrepid Aircraft Museum is fascinating and on the West side...worth the visit even if you have no kids.

CHELSEA:
Walk around the blooming area sprouting awesome restaurants and shops. Chelsea Pier is fun.

WALL ST:
Pay respects to the 9/11 victims and heroes at the WTC site., Walk Wall St., visit the Chase Hdqtrs, Federal Reserve. Seaport area is great to see.

THE VILLAGE:
Funky shops in the West Village. Walk through the NYU Washington Square Park. The East Village has some shops from new artists and designers

SOHO:
Great galleries and shops on n off West Broadway. Walk thru to Little Italy for awesome meals and desserts...walk through Chinatown. CANAL STREET has stall after stall of Designer "copies"...bring cash and bargain and watch your purse!

These should put an awesome smile on your face. Bring your camera and takes lots of photos to remember your trip. You'll have a blast! OH...BUY this weekly magazine: TIMEOUT NEW YORK on any newstand to see what's going on each week/day. :)

I'd have to agree with Gemvamp. Germany is an incredible vacation. If you have any interest in Oktoberfest you might be a little surprised to learn that it actually starts early to mid September & usually ends after the first week in October. Something to keep in mind if you plan to expierence it. If that's not to your kicking back style, you've still got lots to see & do within a day's drive or train ride from Munich. If you're into history, go check out Dachau, the museum at the concentration camp just outside Munich. It has an excellent museum and very touching monuments. If that's too somber, you can always go see the Glockenspiel in Munich. It's a governmenet building with an enormous cuckoo clock built right into the bell tower. All the figurines go round & do a little dance & even has knights who joust! It's loads of fun, just remember to keep your hands on your valuables while the clock is going off. Gypsies & thieves like to pick pockets while all the attention is focused on the clock. Munich also has the Olympic Pavilion and the Frauenkirche, a chathedral with a very entertaining story behind its creation and, supposedly according to legend, sports the footprint of the devil. Also just a short distance outside of Munich is Ludwig II's fairytale castle of Neuschwanstein. This is the castle which provided the inspiration behind Walt Disney's famous Cinderella's Castle in Disney World, Florida. It's positively breathtaking. Also, just across the border you'll find Innsbruck, Austria which sports a Swarovski Crystal outlet store & mine. Salzburg is just a quick ride away where you can see a few locales where The Sound of Music was filmed and you can stop by the birthplace of Mozart. Vienna is also closeby & boasts many great cathedrals, opera houses, & museums. From Munich, you're also in a position to go visit the small independant kingdom of Liechtenstein on your way to Switzerland. Heidelberg Germany is also in the neighborhood with the world's largest beer barrel and the oldest university in Germany. Every year in Heidelberg, the castle ruins are set "on fire" with fireworks to commemorate a battle. Frankfurt Germany is then only a short ride away with a great nightlife & excellent shopping and a major international airport to bring you back home when you're all done. Have a great trip!

I went to Dubai a few months ago and it was fantastic – the only thing is it’s a massive building site at the moment but that also reflects the cost. You can get some bargain luxury accommodation. We stayed here: http://www.oasisbeachtower.com/apartment.htm and it was awesome. I should imagine, once all the building is complete it will become quite expensive. If you’re open-minded and the site of a lot of cranes doesn’t put you off then give it a go.

Dubai has great night life, fantastic bars/night clubs with lots of decent people (ie no piss heads falling all over the place), it’s REALLY hot, the sea is like bath water, the food is great and there are lots of great excursions and shopping. If you do go, you must do the Sand Safari!

By the way, New York is fantastic too :)

I started writing to a penpal in America (i'm English) 42 years ago. We kept in touch by letters only until 2 years ago when we started emailing. She has been married 4 times and has 2 sons and i also married and had a daughter. Last September my husband and I made the trip of a lifetime and actually went over to NC to meet my friend for the very first time. We all went sight seeing around 5 states..... visiting the mountains in Virginia, Rock city in GA, Atlanta,TheYorktown aircraft carrier,South C. The Battleship NC, The 82nd Airborne museum NC, New River Gorge WV, The Country music hall of Fame in Nashville and much more. It was a very emotional meeting and an unforgetable holiday. Hopefully my friend and her husband will visit England for the first time next year.

I was in New York last October and had a really great time, it's an amazing city. I think it would be too stuffy when warmer. You have to take a horse and cart round Central Park and eat in Tavern on the Green. There's so much to see and do! Have a wonderful time

New York is great in October, or nearly any other time.

New Orleans is great that time of year, too, and, yes, I have been back since Katrina, and it was fantastic. The tourist areas are well cleaned up and just as fun as ever. And they have lots of great Halloween festivities.

Toronto is delightful, and you have the benefits of all the typical city stuff, plus a very nice wine region just an hour outside the city.
