If you think about it, we humans are much higher up than a dog is and so we see things from a different angle and as such we may not see dog poo on the ground/floor.

Dogs however are at a much lower level and could easily spot a pile of dog poo and avoid it.

Also, dogs can sense smell better than us and so would also smell it before we got the chance too.

Good question.

:-)

They do step in it, particularly as they get older. But younger dogs are blessed with a keen sense of scent usually, and if anything it is a way of scenting other dogs.

Sometimes they eat it — that behaviour is learned as puppies. The mother eats the puppies' milky faeces to keep the litter clean, and some dogs never unlearn that behaviour, particularly if you have two dogs from the same litter.

But believe me, dogs can and do step in poo.

Actually they do step in dog poo. You need to get your facts straight before you ask a question.

Well, I COULD go for the gross-out answer and say that they eat it before they get a chance to step in it. (And after they eat poop, they invariably want to lick your face! AAAACK!!)

And some of them LIKE stinky stuff, and they'll roll around in poop and/or vile, rotten garbage and dead things just to carry those "wonderful" odors around with themselves!

But seriously: They're right down there, on the ground, close to the poop, so there's no way that they'd not see it and step in it by accident, like people do. And besides, their sense of smell is something like 300X greater than a human's, and dogs sort of "see" with their noses. They'd never accidentally step on something that they could literally smell a mile away! ;D

The same reason a cat won't use a litter box if another cat has pooped where it wants to. They are very territorial. Also, they are smarter than us, because WE do step in it. We don't look to see if there happens to be any on the ground, whereas they sniff and are lower/closer to the ground so they do see it..

They do. But it's often a heap from another dog that they get into accidentally. What a mess that is to clean up! They are real good at sniffing other dogs' do, too.

That is a fantastic question, it's something I've always wondered. When I bring our two dogs out for their perambulation that always walk dangerously close to the poop but miss it at the last minute!! What is it?

Who says they don't? My Dogs stepped in it before, yes they were running but they still did.

They sniff the ground nose first, but they do get other dogs poo on their noses.
