take the item he likes the most and put it in his mouth like a shoe or sock and tape his mouth shut over it right and let him carry it around a couple of hours and he will never do it again. believe me it works.

I have a rat terrier also, she has never chewed up the house though, because from the very beginning she's always had rawhide. But now it's become a problem, because she just leaves reminents of small bones around the house. So we bought her a fairly big rawhide bone that she happilly chews, and it's fixed all chewing problems. So you should try the bone idea, but not the kid of bone that takes them like a minute to eat, those won't do, you need the rawhide type of bone!

I can't believe all the animal abusers on this site!! How awful!! Tape a dogs mouth shut??? You could be arrested for that! How cruel!! Pop the dog in the nose?!?!? Mean, Mean, Mean!!! There are far more humane ways to deal with animal destructivness without resorting to hitting them and suffocating them!

My first thought is that your dog is bored. Take at least an hour each day to run with him and play with him. A tired dog is a non-destructive dog. If you don't have that much time, then you shouldn't have a rat terrier - they are a very high energy breed. Hire a dog sitter or dog walker to help with the burden - I'm sure a kid in your neighborhood would be happy to walk him for $20 a week.

My next thought questions where you are when he is destroying things. Try to always keep him in the same room with you. If you can't watch him, then he may need to be crated. But remember, no animal should be crated for more than 3-4 hours in their home - unless it's bedtime and they've been out all day.

You also need to pick up temptations. If he chews shoes, keep shoes in a closet that he can't get into. If he chews your bed, keep your BR door closed.

You can also buy bitter apple spray to spray on things that can't be moved. If he chews your table leg, spray some of this on it. It won'e hurt him but he'll hate the taste.

Make sure you have ample chew toys for him to work on. Kongs are an amazing thing as well. If you know you can't watch him for a little bit and you don't want to crate him, give him a kong with frozen peanut butter in it. He'll spend awhile trying to get at it.

You may also want to get involved with an obedience class. Teaching him no, leave it, and how to mind you may help.

And lots of good old fashioned love and play time will always help! Good luck to you!

I have a rat terrier and she loves to chew. I divert her attention by giving her things that she can chew. She loves rawhide bones and the rope toys. I dog proof the house so that she can't get to things that I don't want her to chew on. It is after all the nature of the dog to chew on things.

You act that you are leaving the house then leave but come back in don't let the dog see and go hide and when the dog is chewing on things come out with a mop or brem and that will scared

You may have to restrict it to certain zones in your house. Your authority over the dog is important. Does it see you as the leader of the pack? What sort of training have you given the dog?

And you have to keep it occupied with plenty of chew toys and positive reinforcement when it chews those, and not other things.

All dogs especially puppies have an instinct to chew. You need to give them something they are allowed to chew like boiled beef bones, chew toys or an old pair of sneakers. Either you give them something they are allowed to chew or they will pick anything else.

Get him some rats to chew on, it's what he was bred for. Barring real rats I would get lots of chewy toys, this guy needs the activity.

Buy Bitter apple & spray it on stuff you dont want the dog to chew on. Before you spray it on stuff, spray some on the dogs tongue & see its reaction....if he/she doesnt like it then it'll work. You can also try this with lemon or limes.

pop it on the nose everytime it chews, or get rid of it and get a real dog, like a Lab or something
