They tried to outlaw it in prohibition times. It doesn't work. Alcohol is too easy to make with stuff in your kitchen. My aunt used to take fruit juice and yeast, mix it and let it ferment into Christmas wine. Nothing to it. They figure they may as well make it legal so they can regulate it and tax it.

Cars, guns and many other things are also legal but cause problems. Alcohol you don't need a permit for but you do have to be a specific age. Most people who drink alcohol do it responsably, but it is the minority who abuse it, just like cars and guns and that is where the problem is. That way it is legal to use but not to abuse.

People would go on rants saying that it affected their 'free will'. Also, if you think about it, guns cause so many problems too (although its in the constitution). If nobody but police/military had guns, there would be much less problems. Yes, they allow weapons in the constitution but that was like 200 years ago when technology wasn't thriving and people were murdering each other. So, to your question, I think alcohol should be legal in small amounts, and yes it does cause so many problems.

So it can be regulated, taxed and the government to control access to it. When alcohol was illegal in america in the 1920s it only reduced consumption of it slightly - instead of having pure alcohol criminal gangs used to cut it with other chemicals, which was bad for everyone's health, as well as making organised criminals a lot of money. So although alcohol is one of the most socially destructive drugs it can't be made illegal, because it's so popular.

it caused far more problems when it was illegal. it killed a little under 50,000 during prohibition. when it's legal it can be regulated. that's why the ATF was founded. the Bureau of Alcohol, Tabacco, and Firearms controls legal drugs, while the DEA combats illegal drugs.

Because 70 million American's would either revolt or flee the country if they tried for another prohibition. Plus, we'd first have to elect a president who doesn't drink. That it's self is dam near impossible.

if everything that had the potential to cause a problem were illegal, EVERYTHING would be illegal (pencils could poke someone's eye out, etc ......)
also, because some idiots make a mess of things with something is never justification for penalizing the rest of us who don't (likewise, your having children doesn't give you any prerogative to remove all the "adult" things from life for those of us who DON'T want children)
besides, who really has the right to decide for YOU other than you?

Why are guns legal?
Why is smoking legal?
Why are pork rinds legal?
Why is skydiving legal?
Because we live in a society of choice. You can choose all these things if you also know how to control yourself.
