I can have everything closed on my desktop and the system task manager will still show winword.exe utilizing 99% of CPU. Any ideas on how to fix. Program is so old that we have lost the program disc. Weird thing is that the only thing I can utilize with any speed today is the internet. Help please.

this is a good one try to goto microsoft and have them answer that one, one feature of XP and win. 2000 is the system restore u may have a virus norton is a joke and so is symantec try the free versins of spybot search and destroy or adaware that comes on aol disc.. both are share ware and are free, but u have to know how to get into the disc to be able to use them without installing aol so be careful..
The reason norton and symantec dont catch everything is because they are after the big stuff they dont see certain things as a threat so they rigth by it, take for example www.coolwebsearch. that is spyware and they go right by it...
So let me know if this works okay.

I'm assuming you have this problem after:
- you closed all other programs except Word
- you are not running a fancy screensaver in the background
- you ran an error check or scandisk
- ran a diskcleanup (Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools)
- ran a defrag
- went to IE6, then Tools, Internet Options, and deleted cookies and offline files
???
Try all these and see if it helps!
