especially when family members are involved. Isn't it just plain murder.

I wouldn't ask a question like this if there hadn't been two in my county over the past year.

If is of course not, but you have to remember, if your grandparents were taught this as children, your parents were taught this as children from birth and you are taught this,

You beleive it, and you can't beleive that everyone does not do it. In fact you would beleive that cultures that do not, are barbaric that they allow such dishonor on thier families.

When one culture starts viewing another culture they do so from the view points they have been taught , just as that culture views ours.

They can't understand how a man could watch his wife live him for another man, They can't understand how we in other faiths merley sit and watch others make fun of our faith,

So for a muslim they would merley ask the question, how can a family have any honor if they don't inforce strict obedience to thier family codes of honor

I don't agree with them, but do understand why they beleive it

Stop associating honor killings to Muslims and Islam! It is NOT a part of Islam's teachings! It's just part of old mentalities and traditions!
Jordan for example, is a Muslim country that condems honor killings! The only way to stop them is by educating people and showing them it's wrong! True Islam does NOT promote violence and terrorism.

It's a complicated issue that cuts deep into the history of Arab society. There is no specific mention of honor killing in the Qur'an or Hadiths. Some Islamic religious authorities and Muslims in general, disagree with extra-legal punishments such as honor killing and prohibit it, since they consider the practice to be a cultural issue. They believe that since certain pre-Islamic cultures have influence over a number of Muslims, murderers of females use Islam to justify honor killing, even though there is no support for the act in the religion itself.

The European Convention of Human Rights states that it is a human right not to be subjected to cruel and barbarous treatment. A number of countries have embodied this principle in their own legislation eg In the UK The Human Rights Act 1998, and in Finland it is part of the constitution,

This would provide a basis for legal action over honour killings, suttee, and the Muslim practice of a minor cleric ordering the chopping off of a hand or a foot for theft (under the Sharia),

If we are to live in a civilised (as opposed to barbaric) world, all such cruel and barbarous practices have to be outlawed and people punished if they engage in them.

It's not honourable. Just another excuse to justify their murderous actions. How can people who do that live with themselves? It's sad and pathetic. If it's all because of religion then I'm glad I'm a non-believer.

In my opinion yes. It goes against everything that I have ever been taught. I can accept that people have strong beliefs...but when those beliefs tell them to kill, I cannot believe that they are good beliefs.

And...before anyone gets offended, I have nothing against muslims...indeed, many of my friends are muslims. Perhaps it is the reporting of these so called "honour killings" that is wrong? Maybe, if we looked hard enough, we would find similar happenings in Christian culture?

i wish i could understand why anybody would have the pre-emptive desire to kill anyone let alone a family member, just so that i could find a way of avoiding anyone else ever being a victim. alas i think there can never be a good enough reason to kill another human being. and i know one thing family honour and religion are nowhere near being the answer. who else would want to marry your other children knowing you'd happily kill one of your own?

It's not. But it makes a great excuse for the brutal murder of your own family members!

You are confusing Islam with tribalism.

For further information, I suggest you refer to the following work: Yahiya Emerick's The Complete Idiot's Guide to Understanding Islam 2nd edition. It should be available through your local library system or bookstores or you can order it online from Amazon.com.

Murder is murder. Murder is not "OK" because someone is from a different culture. That isn't "religion" that's just common sense.
