Good and Evil must exist in the world in order for everything to function. The world would not be able to function if there was only good or only evil. Therefore, the counterpart to God's goodness is the evil we experience in everyday life. All the bad things are also a purpose for individuals to realize that goodness really exists and make a comparison between what is good and bad in their lives. For example, if you were only provided with the good, you wouldn't know it was good unless you were provided with some bad. That is why there are disasters and evil in the world. However, some people may also believe that it is the people that make the disasters in the world. God has created mankind, but there are choices that humans make in their lives that affect everyone around them. Some of these mistakes could be the disasters experienced in the world today.

Ah the paradox of evil... if god is so good how can there be bad things that happen? A very good question....

here is my take on things, and i have walked many different lines, from christian (raised that way) atheist (felt more aligned to that than anything else)... to agnostic/deist (my current standing).

I think we are way to arrogant in thinking that God is anything like man...
... I prefer to take the belief that God (or substitute, energy, life force, etc) is in everything. from the tiny vibrations of atoms, to the strong and weak forces holding them together, to the black holes eating chewing on space and time... it is the fabric of everything, but it is not a person, or a conscious being who is concerned with what you or I do day to day. God is simply the clockmaker of the universe, It (god) is the brief moment when potential became reality and the entirety of the universe exploded into being.

If you have time I would look into super string or M - theory... It basically says that everything is connected, you to I, the ground to the sun, everything is a part of the same and greater whole... i think that is what god is... not some guy with a beard floating in the clouds looking down with contempt at your weaknesses.

I think looking at things this way also is quite inspiring because the do unto others concept is solidified, by hurting someone else you are hurting everyone else (Muslim ideal). Treating you poorly is like treating myself poorly (christian ideal).

In the words of Wyld Stallions (Bill and Ted) Be Excellent to Each other... Bad things happen, good things happen... it is the rhythm of everything... it is not willed that way by a Deity...

Good question!
The book of Job helps to understand all this ....a bit.
Job 2: 8 - 11 and Job 2:4 - 5 explain that God has been challenged.
Time is needed for the answer.
And the answer is not about God, but US!

Because God is displeased. It's not without precedence, the flood in Noah's time. Now today, we have the Tsunami's and Hurricane Katrina etc...
God is again displeased. We have airplanes running into buildings in His name, we have gay marriages, etc...
Notice if you have wisdom, that the disasters are becoming more and more frequent.
The lives of many to save the righteous? As in the day of Noah?

People are born. People Die. It is the way of things. Bad things happen due to the decisions we make.

the truth is, we were put on this earth, to take care of each other, and when we don't, horrible things happen. unfortunately, this seems to be "just" in the eyes of god.
