Dog "smile" by showing their bottom teeth !
I have a German Shepherd and my trainer told me that. Whenever they show their bottom teeth, it means they are happy at that momment.
Top teeth means the opposite.

Dogs pant with a silly happy open mouth type expression that kinda looks like smiling. They also love to roll around on their back when they are content. Dogs don't truly smile...in dog body language showing your teeth is a threat.

The obvious answer is that your dog is wagging his tail like crazy! Some dogs also DO smile back at you; they lift the back of their lips just a bit & really do look like they're smiling. You can train them to smile on command with lots of praise and pats. You start by praising them the moment they do it and say "Smile!" Repetition will reinforce this, and they will begin to Smile on command. :-)

If you know your dog well enugh.. You can tell when they're smiling at you regardles... Though, the wagged tail and the big open mouth normally gives it away... Though, it's funny because My cats make facial expressions... which is weird.. but in either case, I can tell what there thinking (normally) because of it and the fact I know them soo well...

I have a 6 pound Maltese who gives me the cutest smiles I have ever seen. One of my sons would not believe that Mikey could smile and then saw it for himself and was amazed! You can easily see a smile on a Maltese because they are white and their "lips" are black.

My dogs show their lower teeth and wag their tails when they are happy and by showing their bottom teeth, I know they are smiling.

when your dog looks like he or she is smiling, it is a reaction to stress. Dogs do not really smile.
