To establish credit, you have to have credit. Basically, companies want to see that you are able to make payments over a certain period of time and ontime. If you pay rent and utilities, these aren't typically reported to the credit bureaus. The easiest way to establish a credit history is to get a credit card.

Usually, the best way to get a credit card is by going through your bank or credit union. They will usually offer a student credit card or a secured credit card. Also, if you parents have a credit card, you can ask them to get the credit card for you as an authorized user.

The best option for you would be to get the secured credit card. This is where you deposit a certain amount of money, typically 500 dollars, into the bank that is offering the card. The money that you deposit will be used as collateral against the card.

Get a credit card that is designed just for students. I know that discover offers a card like this and I'm sure other companies do as well. The interest rate is always ridiciclous, like 17-20% so make sure you always pay the balance off each month, but this builds some credit history and before long you can get a regular normal credit card.

See if you can join a credit union as your bank. You're normal transactions will help establish credit. You may want to take out a small loan. Pay it off in exceptional time and you'll have the right start. See if family members already with a credit union can help you join.

open a credit card (preferably one with no annual fee and a low interest rate). Use it sparingly and pay it down every month. Use that to build a record of conscientious spending habits.

If you have any regular monthly bills that you always pay on time (rent, utilities, etc.), ask them to report your history to the credit bureaus. This type of payment history is normally not reported. Creditors want to know you pay your bills on time. Any bills can help show this.

Use an offer like this one where it reports to all 3 credit bureaus. it starts out with a low limit but it will get bigger as you pay on time.
