As a side note to Dukalink6000 your answer is incorrect. There are a number of nations to which United States service personnel can travel with only their military identification. I've been to several but would like to find a list to plan my R&R leave.

Actually dukalink6000 and mrsjvb are both correct and incorrect. I didn't clarify the question to the extent that I said it would require orders or leave papers because I thought, perhaps incorrectly anyone in the military would realize this.

That said however they are both incorrect as well dukalink6000 for the previously cited reason. mrsjvb to the extent that with leave papers or orders one may travel to foreign countries.

This is, simply put a fact. Of course I appreciate the imput however I know there is a list of approved/cooperative countries I just don't know where to find it. If anyone could provide a link or source rather than argue the concept (Which as a member of the military I know to be true and have used) I would much appreciate.

I believe that you can travel almost anywhere on a military ID alone, but you are requiered to have some sort of travel order (orders or leave papers).

I had to fly home from Iwakuni, Japan in 1999 for a funeral and flew back to Okinawa to meet up with my unit, and my leave papers were good enough for both US and Japanese Customs Services.

actually, Dukalink is not incorrect. you may ONLY travel using your military ID IF YOU ARE ON ORDERS. period. R&R doesn't count any more, and besides, with all the crap that's going on in the world, do you REALLY want to set yourself up for possible kidnapping or worse by advertising the fact that you are US Military?

as of 2359hrs 31 December 2006 you will need a passport to enter the US from any port of call, so might as well get one now if you don't already have one.

My boyfriend is in the US Navy and he once said that he can travel to any country in the world without a passport so long as he has his millitary ID on him.

None.

By January 1st, 2007, ANYTIME you leave the country by any means, you will need a passport.

Currently, Canada and Mexico are OK with it, but not for much longer.
