Whenever I travel, even internationally, I try to keep a little of everything -- and I pack it in different places. That way, even if your purse/wallet is stolen with everything in it you have at least one back up.

I would take 20% of my money in traveller's checks, another 35 - 45% in cash and leave the rest in the account and use a debit card. The card can be used to get cash, or to make large purchases directly at a store.

Keep the cash or checks you plan on spending in a day in your purse or wallet easily accessable. The rest you should keep either on your person (the best way) but close to your body in an inside or front pocket. If you're at the beach...make sure you hide the money very well in your bags or request the hotel keep some of it in their safe behind the desk. Make sure you get a receipt from them if you do!

If you follow all of these you'll be protected no matter what!

We just returned from Florida. We did ATM machines/debit cards because I checked our banks website and got the locations of their ATM's in each city we were in. It made the trip so much easier than having to keep up with Traveler's checks and we didn't have to hold onto a lot of cash at one time. Check your banks websites for locations.
